The Pitch Rail
2024An instrument built for live performance that uses a distance sensor to calculate space between the main control box and a wall. Three buttons on the side allow the user to play the three notes of a major chord - the root, third, and fifth notes. As the user slides the control box up and down the rail, the selected note modulates up and down. Sensor data is converted to MIDI within the embedded Arduino and transmitted wirelessly via Bluetooth to a laptop with Ableton Live  offstage.

Attached to the instrument is a phone mount which allows for further control of the sound  using a custom-built TouchOSC patch to modulate  over  20 different parameters such as arpeggiation, scale, key, reverb, delay, and more.

Real-time visuals for the live performance built in TouchDesigner capture MIDI data from Ableton to display current note information on an abstract piano-like interface.
